Ransomware
Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts an organisation's files and demands a ransom to release them; it often comes with data theft.
In practice
It most often gets in through a phishing email, poorly protected remote access or an unpatched vulnerability. The best protection combines MFA, up-to-date patches, EDR and offline backups.
The authorities advise against paying the ransom: there is no guarantee that the data will be returned.
